FREELAND

About the project

The FREELAND project is focused on promoting STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) through participatory urban regeneration. The project’s goal is to revitalize neglected urban spaces and transform them into inclusive and sustainable communal areas. Through this process, social and civic engagement among students and local communities is encouraged, and the project enables a blend of formal and informal learning, helping students develop key competencies such as critical thinking and cultural awareness.

The FREELAND methodology is based on integrating the STEAM approach with urban regeneration practices. Through workshops and outdoor activities, students and citizens collaboratively participate in designing and implementing regeneration initiatives in neglected areas. This methodology is not just a tool for education but also a means to foster a stronger sense of community belonging and an understanding of the importance of sustainable development.

A special focus of the project is on education. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the project includes the development of innovative educational modules that will be implemented in schools to transmit STEAM knowledge in a practical and engaging way. These modules include outdoor activities, cultural events, and collaborative projects that allow students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges.

To ensure the project’s long-term impact, a digital platform is being developed as a central hub for knowledge exchange, experiences, and results between schools and communities. This platform will enable teachers, students, and citizens to collaborate on urban regeneration projects, share ideas and approaches, and participate in virtual events and educational resources.

A key outcome of the project will be the FREELAND handbook, designed for schools and relevant stakeholders across Europe. The handbook will include a detailed description of the methodology, practical examples of activities, and tools that can be applied to similar projects. The aim is to provide schools and community organizations with resources to promote sustainability, civic responsibility, and engagement in urban regeneration.

The FREELAND project is implemented through a partnership of organizations from Croatia (City of Rijeka, Center for Technical Culture Rijeka, First Croatian Gymnasium of Sušak in Rijeka), Italy (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Liceo Scientifico Statale “Niccolò Copernico”, MAIEUTIKE’), Germany (Major Cities of Europe IT Users Group), and Poland (Gdańsk University of Technology). It is funded through the Erasmus+ program. Throughout the project, partners will work together to develop the methodology, educational modules, and platform, ensuring their sustainability and accessibility across Europe.
